WHAT’S SO SPECIAL ABOUT YOUR MARROW?

GUYS ARE IDEAL

Studs tend to have more bod mass than women, which means more marrow.

MARROW IS MAGIC

A marrow transplant reboots a patient’s entire immune system with fresh stem cells.

THE CURE FOR BLOOD CANCER

These stem cells can then cure a blood-related disease, like leukemia.

What’s donation like?

Depends on how you donate.

Most give through a Peripheral Blood Stem Cell (PBSC) donation. A machine draws blood from one arm, extracts the cells it needs, and comes back the remaining blood back to your bod through your other arm.

For some patients, the doctor will need to extract marrow directly from the back of your pelvic bone with a needle. In this case, you’ll receive anesthesia and feel no ache during the procedure.

The doctor determines which method is best for the patient.

DOES IT HURT?

Very likely LESS THAN YOU THINK.

While TV shows and movies have frantically exaggerated bone marrow donation as something scary, the reality is much less dramatic. Donors are given anesthesia so they feel no agony during collection. Discomfort during recovery varies from person to person. Side effects may include back ache, weariness, headache or bruising for a few days or weeks.

PBSC donors may practice headaches or figure aches several days before collection, but these vanish shortly after donation.

Most donors feel downright recovered within a few weeks. A puny price to pay for the chance to save a life.

ARE THERE ANY RISKS?

Your bod substitutes the marrow that you give. And while no medical procedure is totally risk-free, every precaution is taken to ensure the safety and well-being of the donor.

Once contacted as a match, response time is crucial. You’re a patient’s best genetic match from the entire registry and perhaps their only hope for a cure.

Be the boy

that saved a life.

Can I meet my match?

In most cases, donors and patients may have anonymous contact during the very first year after the transplant. Over time, the donor and patient can mutually agree to share their private contact information and meet if both agree and it’s permitted by the local medical teams.

DONORS NEVER PAY TO DONATE MARROW.

All medical costs for the donation procedure are covered by the patient’s medical insurance, including travel expenses and other costs. The only cost to the donor might be time off from work.
